How Depression causes Overeating

Depression and overeating go together and science has shown us why via brain imaging, there are over 20 million people in the United states who live clinically depressed and this will have a very large impact on your diet. How much you eat is directly related to your emotional well being, with this information from researchers it is clear that willpower is a failed strategy for many people. Depression actually can cause overeating and this is something that is not controlled by will power. If you are depressed and blaming yourself for lack of control, don't, because will power does not stop the kind of overeating.

Why you eat more when depressed

Brain imaging is giving us a wonderful insight into how the human body works, we must understand that the body is holistic, the brain is involved in every bodily function that occurs, when it comes to appetite the brain is in control of how much we eat. Researchers at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CR-CHUM) and the university's Faculty of Medicine have discovered that how much we eat is directly related to our mental health, those who are depressed may be “forced” to eat more(by the brain). The brain does this so as to release feel good hormones to stop the depression. The problem is when the food “high” wears off you are depressed again.

"In addition to causing obesity, rich foods can actually cause chemical reactions in the brain in a similar way to illicit drugs, ultimately leading to depression as the 'come-downs' take their toll," explain lead researcher, Dr. Stephanie Fulton.

Basically the brain releases “feel good” hormones when you eat say “Cake or Ice Cream”, in fact fatty foods help bring your mood up if you are depressed, the problem is you create a cycle of Depressed---Fatty food---Happy----Depressed again

This eating cycle is what so many depressed people find themselves on. Depression causes overeating because the brain creates a craving for fatty foods to boost your mood, the downside is that this can lead to obesity, diabetes and other health problems.

Abused and Suicidal: The Cry of a New Generation

Abused and suicidal, this is the situation that so many people find themselves in, the numbers of people who are suffering from Post traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) due to an abuse is astronomical, researchers show that abuses are one of the major factors in developing future clinical depression. Sadly, for those who have suffered abuses being abused and suicidal go hand and hand.

The far reaching effects of abuse

The abuses from childhood carry into adulthood often manifesting itself as clinical depression, anger and even suicide thought, many are never the same again. The numbers of people suffering maltreatment are increasing according to health records.

According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services statistics for 2006, approximately 905,000 U.S. children were found to have been maltreated that year, with 16% of them reported as physically abused (the remainder having suffered sexual abuse or neglect.

In other studies, it's been noted that approximately 14-43% of children have experienced at least one traumatic abusive event prior to adulthood.

Those who are abused and suicidal must understand that the brain has been changed from the PTSD,this can manifest itself as mental illness in adults

Researchers at a major University found that Post traumatic stress from abuses changed the brain's white matter, this is extremely alarming when we think of a young child’s growing brain, these changes can lead to various mental disorders

"We found that adolescents with maltreatment history who had disrupted white matter tracts during the initial recruitment were more likely to develop depressive and addictive disorders," said Huang of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre's Advanced Imaging Research Centre.

We can see how the abused can easily end up as suicidal adults, all child abuses must be met with the stronger punishment of the law, it is on par with murder due to the lifetime effects on the young brain. We repeat the abuser should be treated as a murder under the law with a similar sentencing.

I am Depressed with suicidal thoughts in college, a serious warning

“I am depressed in college” The numbers of students in University and suicidal are booming, this is a very serious situation that must be addressed quickly to save lives. According to a recent study a whooping 50% of college students admitted that they were suffering from a very deep depression and thinking of suicide. University years are portrayed as all fun and parties in the movies but this is not the reality, people are suffering. “I am Depressed” is a common compliant from college students and suicidal thoughts are real threat.

Half of University students thinking of suicide

In a powerful and very large study by National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education based at the UT-Austin. involving over 25,000 students it was revealed that a shocking 50% had truly contemplated suicide, the reasons were almost always rooted in stresses that were very overwhelming. What is even more shocking is that almost 1/3 had seriously thought of or had actually made an attempt to end their lives. One of the more revealing facts of this trend were that few parents or good friends knew how depressed the students were. “I am depressed” is a situation many are living with in college.

The person suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts are right next to us but we do no see them, we are missing out on helping those in need.

"Most people in university environments don't really appreciate how much suicidality students engage in. They only see the high-profile examples, but they don't see the everyday anguish students are going though," says UT psychologist David Drum, lead author of the research

Depression is increasing worldwide, we are seeing a full epidemic of people who are living in a very stressed state of mind. The movie and TV gives us a view of University life which is not based on truth, University life is stressful, filled with many bad decisions and stresses. There are over 30 million in the USA living daily on antidepressants.

The stress and depressed feeling is from an emptiness. Researchers in Europe have been helping people reverse depression drug free, fill back up” and heal inside, this is depression healing that goes beyond medications, it is read in over 10 countries. It is used by both those who decide to stay on medications and those who choose to live antidepressant free

Abused and Depressed

Those who have been abused and are living depressed should know that they are not alone, there uncountable numbers of people who have had their lives destroyed due to people who misused their confidence. Often these abusers are people who we are “or were” very close to you, it is particularly damaging when it is a person such as a family member, priest, doctor or counselor. Feeling abused and depressed are feelings that often go together.

Depression and PTSD

A traumatic experience at the hands of another can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), this is the root cause of the depression, childhood or even adult maltreatment(abuses) have a direct link to future depression according to researchers at Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Researchers studied the effects of post traumatic events such as physical, sexual,or verbal abuses in and the conclusion was that these events can predict stresses and depression in adulthood.

CMM was directly predictive of decreased social support and increased stress in adulthood. CMM was also directly predictive of PTSD symptoms.

Those who are abused and depressed must realize that these events leave a lasting and even lifetime effect on you, this is not to say that healing cannot occur, those who have been victims at the hands of others and are clinical in a state of depression are often prescribed antidepressants to help the survivor manage their mood.

Beyond antidepressants

Medications can help a person manage to function in their daily lives but it is not a “happy pill”. The inner pain from surviving abuse is not healed with medications, the drugs may be necessary and useful but pills should not be the last step in the healing process. It is imperative to go beyond medications and get inner healing. If you were abused and depressed, the “down” feeling is from an emptiness that survivors often experience, a technique to “fill back up” and heal inside has helped take depression healing beyond medications, it is read in over 10 countries. It is used by both those who decide to stay on medications and those who choose to live antidepressant free

Depression without medication: Going beyond Pills

Is it possible to treat depression without medication? There are ways to handle this very debilitating illness drug free but one should proceed with caution. The numbers of people suffering from the illness is growing very rapidly in the United States, Europe and Asia, more than 28 million Americans are on anti depressants. The most common reason for treating depression without medication is due to the fact that there are many uncomfortable side effects that come with the drug use, this can include numbness, dizziness, anger and mood swings.

Anti depressants

Anti depressants are a necessity for millions of people worldwide , there are literally millions who could not function or manage their day without anti depressants. The numbers of Americans that are on anti depressive medications are growing and the patients are starting younger, there has been a 10% increase in antidepressant uses in college students over the last decade. There are also increasing numbers of people who are trying to combat their depression without medication, the reason for this is due to the fact that the drugs can come with some very troubling side effects. Recently discussed side effects are increased appetite obesity and increased risk of diabetes on a certain class of antidepressants.

Coming of drugs

Never stop taking anti depressants on your own, speak with your doctor before stopping the drugs. There are other techniques that can be used to treat the illness while coming off of the drugs, the major problem with drugs is that there is no inner healing, the drug only covers a deeper emotional problem. There is the inside/out technique that is being used in over 10 countries, a depressed person may feel empty and the technique helps a person fill up emotionally. You heal alone without doctors, drugs or therapy, recently people have been using the technique with their medication or to stop medications. Do not stop medications without speaking to your doctor but do not make drugs the last step in your healing.

It is an inside-out treatment that has been helping teens and adults.  See Here Depression without medication
